Time stays below 1% RSD, depending on the inner diameter of the capillary. 3. At low pH, CElixir provides shorter migration times, higher peaks, better resolution, and better peak shape than conventional buffer. 4. CElixir allows scouting at different pH without an observed memory effect on the same capillary. The system is therefore well suited for method development. The buffers will be most beneficial at low pH, where there is normally very low EOF, or where the EOF is difficult to control, and also for molecules that adhere to the capillary wall.

Were partitioned into diethyl ether. The ether extract was then shaken with one-half its volume of 30%o w v ; methanolic KOH to remove pigments, separated, washed twice with distilled H20, and reduced to about 2 to 3 rotary evaporation at 30 C. Column Chromatography. The organic fraction containing free sterols and sterol esters ; was applied to an alumina column 10 g of neutral alumina activity grade III in a 10-mm-diameter glass column ; and eluted with 100-ml volumes of 1%, 6%, and 20o v v ; petroleum ether b.p. 40-60 C ; in diethyl ether to yield 4demethyl sterol esters, free 4, 4-dimethyl sterols, and free 4-demethyl sterols, respectively 3 ; . The 6% fraction was discarded and the 1% and 20%1o fmctions evaporated to dryness at 30 C. The 20% fraction was taken up in a small volume of diethyl ether, while the 1% fraction was refluxed in 6% w v ; KOH in 90% v v ; ethanol for 1.5 h. After neutralizing with 2 N HCI, the hydrolysate was partitioned with diethyl ether and the ether extract reduced to a small volume by rotary evaporation at 30 C. TLC. Ether extracts of free, glycosylated and esterified sterols were applied as a band to 20- x 20-mm TLC plates Kieselgel G, 0.25 mm ; accompanied by a marker spot containing authentic sitosterol, stigmasterol, campesterol, and cholesterol. After developing in chloroform, plates were dried, sprayed with 0.5% w v ; aqueous Rhodamine 6G, and viewed under UV light. The authentic sterols ran as a single spot RF, about 0.5 ; , and the corresponding extract bands were scraped off and eluted with diethyl ether. The ether extracts were fitered through Whatman No. 1 paper, evaporated to dryness in an air stream, and taken up in 0.3 ml ethanol. Extraction Efficiency. The efficiency of the extraction procedure was determined by measuring recovery of added [4-1 Clcholesterol. A 0. I-ml aliquot of the free sterol extract was counted in 10 ml dioxan-based scintillation fluid NE 250; Nuclear Enterprises Ltd., Edinburgh, U. K. ; in a Packard Tri Carb liquid scintillation spectrometer. Counting efficiency was about 90%o and background about 28 cpm. Recovery was usually between 40 to 50%o and occasionally as high as 65%. Although this correction strictly applies to free sterols only, it was used on all classes of sterols measured. Gas-Liquid Chromatography. To each 0.3 ml of extract, 0.1 ml of an ethanol solution of 5a-cholestane containing 400 , ug ; was added as internal standard. A l-, ul aliquot of the supplemented extract was then injected into a Pye series 104 gas chromatograph. The column 2.1 m x 3 i.d. ; was packed with 3% OV-101 80- 100 mesh ; on Gas-chrom Q Phase Separations Ltd., Queensferry, Clwyd, U. K. ; . The column was isothermal at 250 C and the flame ionization detector temperature 300 C. Nitrogen flow rate was 40 ml min. Sterols were quantified by referring peak areas determined by weighing peak cutouts on precalibrated paper ; to a calibration graph prepared with authentic sterols. A separate graph was constructed for each sterol studied and was checked occasionally. Graphs were replotted whenever the column was repacked or a new syringe was used.

ACTION BY Sub-Group structure and functions need significant revision to allow greater focus on Clinical governance, risk management in relation to prescribing and administration of medicines; Medicines management systems and processes. Glasgow Formulary would still require to reflect local implementation of SMC decisions. Options would be considered for an increasingly regional approach. The MRMG would meet first to consider SMC advice and selected business would be highlighted for ADTC guidance. The Chairman would join the membership of the MRMG. A number of issues regarding medicines management were discussed. The way forward through electronic prescribing was discussed as this would reduce medication errors. There was also a wide ranging discussion around whether "best buys", which would give support to a drugs of choice approach within selected therapeutic categories, should be indicated in the formulary and the implementation of automatic "therapeutic substitution" where indicated. It was felt that medicines management structures were required at Trust level but these could also be Glasgow-wide. Dr Macphee outlined that the South Trust had produced a case for funding for a medical error pharmacist to be employed within the Trust. This had been sent to the Clinical Effectiveness Committee. A wide and detailed discussion ensued on medication errors. Mr Bryson advised that Audit Commission Report for England and Wales ; entitled "A Spoonful of Sugar" which dealt with medication errors had been discussed with the GG Chief Pharmacists Group. It was outlined that this Committee would be interested in taking a lead in this type of plan. A meeting of the Chief Pharmacists Group would be taking place this week and Mr Bryson advised that there may be a way of connecting pharmacy issues into the ADTC. Mr Bryson would relay the Committee's view to the Chief Pharmacists and come back to the Committee with a response. DECIDED: 1. That the notes of the ADTC briefing meeting be sent to all those Members not in attendance for further discussion at the meeting on 15th April 2002. That a draft of the revised Terms of Reference be placed on the agenda for the next meeting. That Mr Bryson bring a response from the Chief Pharmacists Group on the ADTC becoming involved in any project on medication errors in hospitals. Secretary and bilberry.

Torture Against Children Tuesday, 8th of April 2003 organised by the OMCT Moderator was Sverine Jacomy, OMCT Children's Rights Programme Manager, who said torture against children exists and is often committed by state agents. Children's vulnerability, understanding and recovery differ from adults. Children are exposed to torture within their homes, in school and in institutions. Jakob Egbert Doek , Chairperson of the Committee on the Rights of the Child, said there are many important topics to deal with in the world. One is violence against children. It is one of the Committee on the Rights of the Child's priorities, because it is one of the most serious human rights violations. The Committee meets for one day every year to have a General Discussion. It had two days on violence against children. A recommendation they came up with resulted in the forthcoming UN study on violence against children. He highlighted the lack of attention to domestic violence in the "World Fit for Children" document, which was a weakness. It is important to discuss how to proceed in the field of violence against children. It might be helpful for the Comittee to make a general comment on it. The new expanded Committee will meet in May to discuss the topics for further general comments. Violence against children is one of the most likely to be adopted. He stressed that it would be useful to examine the optional protocol reports for information, and to use the information about violence against children that international organisations and NGOs have documented. Alicia Perez Duarte, OMCT Delegate for Latin America, talked about the limited effectiveness of existing mechanisms by the Comittee on the CRC. Protection of children is needed now, she stated. The new mandate has to be developed. It should be balanced with duplication avoided; the structure of the mechanism should be worked out and the workload considered. These elements must be looked at, especially when dealing with exposed children. She talked about the problem of monitoring as State parties sometimes have to wait 6 years to be examined by the Committee on the CRC. She also stressed the -7 importance to look at both economical, social and cultural rights and political and civil rights, and to ensure harmony. When looking at present mechanisms, it is clear that not enough is done regarding violence against children. There is a need for information, recommendations and the obligation for different agents to work together. If the definition of violence against children is too broad, it is diffic ult to protect children's rights. The mechanism must address the different kinds of mistreatment and abuse.

Although Anselm's argument for God's existence presented in this article is based on predominately on reason, Anselm presents the argument as clarification Christian faith. The heart of his argument is the insight that if God is defined as a "being than which no greater can be conceived, " then God could not be conceived of as not existing because perfection, he thinks, implies existence. Baruch Spinoza and Ren Descartes employed versions of the ontological argument where the very concept of God as a perfect being implies existence as a property. In philosophical jargon, a feature of the essence of God is said to be existence and bexarotene.

Mertens, J. 1 ; , D. Raes 1 ; and J. Feyen 1 ; 1 ; Laboratory for Soil and Water, K.U. Leuven; Leuven, Belgium Jan.mertens agr.kuleuven.ac.be Fax: + 32-16-32.97.60 Hydrological modelling implies the use of rainfall data. Its quality and resolution are directly affecting the quality of the simulation results of such models. The need to disaggregate rainfall into a sequence of individual storms of a finer time scale cannot be overemphasised and considerable research has been conducted on methods for disaggregating rainfall totals. Most published methods use very sophisticated numerical techniques. This study illustrates that for water flow in soils a simple frequency analysis of the rainfall data improves significantly the simulation results. Rainfall data of the Royal Meteorological Institute of Belgium, collected with a resolution of 10 minutes and for a consecutive period of 61 years is used herein. Using the simple disaggregation procedure based on the frequency analysis, daily rainfall was disaggregated to 10 minutes resolution rainfall using three artificial threshold levels for rainfall intensity. The latter were derived from the analysis of the 61 year 10 minute interval data set. To test the effect of the disaggregation approach the water flow in three soil monoliths sand, loam, clay ; was examined for three levels of probability of annual rainfall 10%, 50% and 90% wet year ; , using the HYDRUS-1D model. The effect of disaggregating rainfall on water flow, for each soil type and wet year, was measured comparing the simulated cumulative runoff and infiltration using as reference the simulation results derived with the measured 10 minutes resolution precipitation data as model input. The comparative analysis revealed that the simple rainfall disaggregation procedure presented, independently from the threshold level selected for rainfall intensity, produces better results than when daily rainfall is used!
