ENT INFECTIONS ALFREDO Q. PONTEJOS, M.D. In general, infections comprise about 60-70% of all cases seen in ENT practice. Ten percent of these ultimately become surgical, with 21% requiring an emergency operation. The 3 most common infections UP-PGH, 1989 ; are: 1 ; chronic tympanomastoiditis; 2 ; dento-alveolar abscess; and 3 ; peritonsillar abscess. CHRONIC TYMPANOMASTOIDITIS This disease condition is secondary to unresolved and or untreated otitis media. The most common bacteria isolated are Proteus mirabilis 60% ; and Pseudomonas aeruginosa 13% ; . Diagnosis is established by physical examination. Otoscopy reveals a marginal or attic perforation of the tympanic membrane with scanty foul smelling discharge. In the presence of subperiosteal abscess, there is fever, headache, ear pain and postauricular swelling. In the presence of Bezold's abscess located below the mastoid tip, swelling is present in the infraauricular area over the upper portion of the sternocleidomastoid muscle. Treatment includes the administration of intravenous antibiotics, incision and drainage of the abscess, and radical mastoidectomy. DENTOALVEOLAR ABSCESS This disease condition results from either carious teeth or trauma to the teeth or gums. The infection is usually mixed, involving Streptococcus and Staphylococcus. The condition manifests as swelling over the gums teeth pulp and adjacent soft tissue. Management includes broad spectrum antibiotics combined with incision and drainage. PERITONSILLAR ABSCESS This disease is secondary to severe or partially treated tonsillitis. The most commonly isolated bacteria are Streptococcus pyogenes, Staphylococcus aureus and Bacteroides sp.

It is highly androgenic and has a distinct protein -improving and anticatabolic effect. Estandr6n also improves the body's ability to regenerate; it lubricates joints by storing fluid in the connective tissue, and it increases the glycogen level n the muscle cells. Why in the world are estrogens included in a steroid compound whose main component is the male sex hormone testosterone? The answer is simple: Estandron's target group is not men but women. The steroid developed by Organon Company is a com-bination of androgens estrogens which in school medicine is used in the treatment of climacteric disorders various physical conditions occurring in women in menopause ; and of osteoporosis. The an-tagonistic contrasting ; sexual effects are distinct. Another positive aspect is also the fact that estrogens reinforce the storage of calcium in bones. Unfortunately, the estradiol mixture can lead to the formation of edemas and weight gain in both sexes. This results in excessive water retention and the risk of formation of subcutaneous fat deposits with increases in the dosage.
