A buffer containing higher concentrations of Mg2 and Ca2 was used to minimize hyperexcitability caused by bicuculline. Because a progressive increase in excitatory mossy fiber collaterals into the inner molecular layer occurs as a result of seizures Tauck and Nadler, 1985; Cronin et al., 1992 ; , possible changes in population spike measures were anticipated. In the presence of bicuculline, there was no significant difference one-way ANOVA, LSD post hoc comparison, p 0.05 ; between saline- n 13 ; and pilocarpine- n 14 ; treated animals in the following: 1 ; threshold for population spike generation, 2 ; stimulus intensity required to elicit a half-maximal response S1 2 ; , or primary population spike amplitude at either the S1 2 or 300 A stimulus.

Of these patients, 159 47% ; exhibited normal salivary flow rates 28 mm 3 min and 179 53% ; patients had clinical diagnosis of xerostomia subjective ; or salivary gland hypofunction objective MST measurement ; . Of the patients with clinical diagnoses of xerostomia or salivary gland hypofunction, 30 17% ; had mild dry mouth with MST 24-27 mm 3 min., 47 26% ; had moderate dry mouth with MST 11-23 mm 3 min., 92 51% ; had severe dry mouth with MST 10 mm 3 min, and 10 6% ; of the patients had a sensation of dry mouth with MST 28 mm 3 min.
