6-1. INTRODUCTION The human urogenital systems are made up of the urinary organs, which produce the fluid called urine, and the genital or reproductive organs, organs of male and female humans, which together can produce a new human being. 6-2. DISCUSSION OF LESSON CONTENT This lesson will focus on the human urinary and reproductive systems. The urinary system will be discussed first.

Phology as uninfected treated cells. At concentrations ranging from 4 to 200 , IM, viral production was normal Table 1 ; . At 250 ttM, cells detached from the substrate, and viral production was inhibited by 50%. As viral production was also inhibited in artificially detached infected cells, no definite conclusion can thus be drawn for high concentrations. Cells treated with another local anesthetic, procaine, at 0.6 mM became slightly vacuolated, primarily at the cell periphery. Vacuolization was greater at 2.5 mM and led to an increase in cell volume. At a concentration of 10 mM, the cells became completely rounded and adhered only slightly to the substrate. Vacuolization had already been observed on different cell types 5 ; . Infected cells treated with procaine, even at 6 h postinfection Fig. lf ; , retained the same morphology as uninfected cells. The following effects of procaine on viral production were observed in a dosedependent manner: i ; there was a delay in the emergence of the first virions 1 h with 0.9 mM, 2 h with 2 mM, 4 h with 4.4 mM, and 6 h with 10 mM ii ; postinfection, the viral production decreased with increasing concentrations Table 1 iii ; maximal viral production reached 109 PFU ml with 2 mM procaine and no more than 105 PFU ml with 10 mM procaine. This inhibitory effect of procaine on viral production either in CER cells or BHK cells is not a general property of local anesthetics as dibucaine and tetracaine had no effect. It has been reported that the combination of cytochalasin B and colchicine mimics the cellular effects of procaine 16 ; . When these two drugs were added together to 125 yM each ; , cells rounded up, but viral production was still normal. This result suggests that the action of procaine on VSV production is not a consequence of the effect of that drug on cytoskeleton depolymerization. In fact, further studies have shown that one of the effects of procaine is at the protein synthesis level, G protein synthesis being the most affected F. Bussereau and N. Genty, manuscript in preparation ; . Procaine does not have a direct toxic effect leading to cell death as this effect is reversible on cell morphology as well as on viral production. Temperature-sensitive ts ; mutants from the Orsay group belonging to complementation groups I, III, and V were used to explore the.

| Pseudomonas aeruginosa is an omnipresent and environmental organism with intrinsic resistance to many kinds of antibiotics 24 ; . It causes an opportunistic infection in immunocompromised or neutropenic patients or severe chronic pulmonary infection such as cystic fibrosis or diffuse panbronchiolitis 5, 13, 20 ; . Recently, many new 3-lactams with antipseudomonal activity have been clinically available. Among these antibiotics, carbapenems have potent antibacterial activity against P. aeruginosa. However, carbapenemresistant P. aeruginosa strains which lack the outer membrane protein D2 OprD ; have been clinically isolated 3, 21, 26, ; . OprD is thought to form a specific porin channel for basic amino acids and carbapenems 11, 34 ; . Porins are major outer membrane proteins which form transmembrane pores that constitute the route into bacterial cells for nutrients and hydrophilic antibiotics 15 ; . In Escherichia coli, the amounts of OmpC and OmpF porins are altered in several environmental conditions 8 ; and also in the presence of procaine 32 ; and weak acids, such as salicylates 27 ; . Therefore, antibiotic resistance can be induced 9, 27, 30 ; . Salicylate also depresses the synthesis of porins in Klebsiella pneumoniae, Serratia marcescens 30 ; , and Pseudomonas cepacia 2 ; . Recently, it was found that several outer membrane proteins in P. aeruginosa have porin activity 29 ; . However, there have been no reports dealing with porins in P. aeruginosa grown in the presence of salicylate. In this study, we examined the effects of salicylate on the antipseudomonal activities of various antibiotics and the synthesis of the outer membrane proteins in P. aeruginosa. We report evidence that the phenotypic resistance to carbapenems in P. aeruginosa caused by salicylate is due to its specific suppression of OprD synthesis. This is the first paper that shows the correlation between amount of OprD and the activities of carbapenems against P. aeruginosa. Moreover, we reveal that meropenem has different proper.

The events of the nuclear holocaust in Japan have led the leaders of the nations with nuclear capability to avoid the use of nuclear weapons. However, as more nations develop the technological capability to construct nuclear devices, the threat of a repeat of the devastation of Hiroshima becomes more likely. Therefore, medical officers must be prepared to treat the casualties of nuclear warfare. Biological Warfare The use of biological weapons in warfare is not a recent development. OF THE DANGERS of currently available antiarrhythmic drugs is their propensity to depress cardiovascular function. This is true of quinidine, procaine amide, and propranolol. All three depress cardiac contractility and may be toxic to patients with myocardial disease.' Lidocaine and diphenylhydantoin, two drugs not commonly thought to be myocardial depressants, also possess this undesirable effect.2 Furthermore.
RAFT-VERSUS-HOST disease GVHD ; is a major cause of morbidity and mortality after allogeneic bone marrow transplantation.' The pathophysiology of GVHD is incompletely defined but is largely mediated by T lymphocyte Acute GVHD develops in approximately half of patients receiving a bone marrow transplant from an HLA-identical donor, despite post-transplant immunosuppressive therapy using methotrexate, cyclosporine, or other drug Use of combinations of immunosuppressive agents has been more effective than single agents in preventing this complication.' * An alternative approach for preventing GVHD is to deplete the putative effector cells, T lymphocytes, from the donor bone marrow before transplantation.'-" T-cell depletion is the most effective method of preventing GVHD, but the risk of graft failure is The most common indication for bone marrow transplantation is the treatment of 1 e lConsiderable data ~ support the concept that allogeneic marrow transplantation confers a graft-versus-leukemia GVL ; effect associated with GVHD. In animal models, this GVL effect can be observed in the absence of GVHD, I4 but it is uncertain whether this GVL effect can be separated from GVHD in and protriptyline.
