Introduction nts are conspicuous and dominant all over the globe. Their diversity and abundance both peak in the tropical regions of the world and gradually decline towards temperate latitudes. Nonetheless, certain species such as Formica can be locally abundant in some temperate countries. In the tropical and subtropical regions numerous species have been described, but many more remain to be discovered. Multiple studies have shown that ants represent a high percentage of the biomass and individual count in canopy forests. Moreover, it has been established that ants seldom organize in dominant and subdominant species assemblages, a configuration that influences the structure and dynamics of not only native forests, but also agricultural systems. About 11500 ant species have been described worldwide. Of these, about 3100 30% ; are present in the Neotropical Region, making it one of the richest regions worldwide in terms of ant species. Under such perspective, the present work aims to present a synonym lists of the subfamilies, tribes, genera and species of ants present in the Neotropical Region, the geographical area confined between Mexico and Chile and Argentina including the Caribbean ; . In this work we present a quickreference alphabetical checklist of the valid names of ants available until October 2004. Readers can find additional taxonomic information in the excellent catalogue by Bolton 1995 ; , as well as in the classic abridged catalogue by Kempf 1972 ; , subsequently updated by Brando 1991 ; . In the following paragraphs we offer a brief revision of some aspects of the biology of ants, rather as an excuse to mention some recent and interesting advances on the study of ants.

The combination of vinorelbine and gemcitabine is appealing for elderly patients due to the limited incidence of severe nausea vomiting, mucositis, alopecia and cardiotoxicity compared with conventional anthracycline-based regimens ; and of severe asthenia compared with weekly taxanes ; . A regimen of vinorelbine 30 mg m2 and gemcitabine 1.200 mg m2 on days 1 and 8, every 21 days, was tested on mostly pretreated breast cancer patients in two phase II studies with overall response rates ranging from 22% [11] to 45% [12], with G3G4 neutropenia of 37.4% [12] to 48% [11]. Other authors administered a different regimen of vinorelbine 25 mg m2 and gemcitabine 1000 mg m2 once every 2 weeks in 50 pretreated patients median age of 58 years ; and obtained 54% of responses with no G3G4 neutropenia [13]. Even if some elderly women were accrued to these trials, median age was below 60 years in all of them. A dose-finding study was conducted on non-small-cell lung cancer NSCLC ; patients aged 70 years or older in whom a schedule of vinorelbine 25 mg m2 plus gemcitabine 1000 mg m2 on days 1 and 8 was demonstrated to incur manageable toxic effects and was therefore chosen to be tested in a multicentre, randomized Italian study on elderly NSCLC patients [14]. We decided to start a phase II trial with this regimen of vinorelbine plus gemcitabine as first-line chemotherapy for patients older than 70 years with advanced breast cancer.

That the normal left ventricular wall thickness on echocardiography would argue against significant aortic stenosis. Since the prognosis is so limited in this patient, I would favor surgery accepting an exceedingly high mortality and uncertainty as to the results. At our institution, we would first institute intra-aortic balloon counterpulsation in order to allow for safe induction of anesthesia as well as to assist in trying to get the patient off cardiopulmonary bypass and through the immediate postoperative period. The aortic valve would first be explored in order to assess the severity of aortic stenosis. Even a mild degree of aortic stenosis would justify aortic valve replacement under these circumstances. Our surgeons would then proceed to the construction of triple bypass grafts I assume the arteries are angiographically bypassable-the protocol is not clear on this point ; . The risk of surgery would probably be in the range of 50 percent to 60 percent, and the results uncertain. I suppose that alternatively one might consider cardiac transplantation. However, I do not believe transplantation should be performed in any individual in whom there is even a remote possibility that conventional surgical methods might effect an improvement and viracept.

Following a recommendation made by parents, advocates and providers involved in the Southeast Mental Health System of Care, Natchaug opened an Extended Day Treatment EDT ; program to serve younger children. Because of its central location, our Montville Joshua Center was selected for the EDT program for eight- to 12-year olds. New London County adolescents will continue to receive treatment in Natchaug's CarePlus EDT program in Groton, and Thames Valley EDT program in Norwich. Studies from other groups have shown similar results, e.g., a Southwest Oncology Group trial of neoadjuvant cisplatin and etoposide with concurrent RT, then surgery in 126 stage IIIA and IIIB NSCLC patients demonstrated a 26% 3-year survival rate and 10% treatment-related mortality 20 ; . More recently, Thomas et al. studied induction chemotherapy with ifosfamide, CAR, and etoposide, followed by concurrent hyperfractionated RT plus weekly CAR and vindesine, then surgery in stage III NSCLC. Median survival was 20 months, with a 3-year survival of 30%. Therapy-related mortality was 9%, and surgery-specific mortality was 7.5%, indicating that surgery after CT RT is safe 21 ; . The added benefit of surgery after CT RT is, however, unproven by randomized data. Results from a Phase III Intergroup trial comparing trimodality therapy to CT RT alone in this patient population are awaited. Despite recent advances, survival in locally advanced NSCLC remains poor, and most patients will die of their disease. Currently, combined modality treatment of locally advanced NSCLC often involves RT plus CAR and paclitaxel. Phase I and II studies of these agents in varying doses and schedules have demonstrated response rates from 52 to 79% and median survival times from 14 to 26 months 2227 ; . One strategy for improving outcomes is to investigate newer chemotherapeutics in multimodality regimens. DOC offers several potential advantages, as suggested by preclinical studies. First, this taxane inhibits microtubule depolymerization and causes cell cycle arrest in the radiosensitive G2-M phase. Compared with molar equivalents of paclitaxel, DOC is associated with a higher percentage and more prolonged duration of G2-M arrest in human cancer cell lines 28 ; . DOC acts as a potent radiosensitizer, enhancing tumor response 2-fold, with the best gains achieved with intermittent multiple doses of DOC during a course of fractionated RT 29, 30 ; . Furthermore, DOC aborts mitosis and causes cell death during S phase, thereby exerting its cytotoxic effect at more than one point in the cell cycle 31 ; . Thus, one rationale for this study is to investigate this taxane given concurrently with RT. Clinical trials of DOC in NSCLC have shown consistent single agent activity, with response rates ranging from 19 to 63% 3237 ; . DOC has become a standard second-line therapy in advanced NSCLC on the basis of two RCTs showing improved survival and quality of life compared with best supportive care and vinorelbine or ifosfamide 38, 39 ; . Moreover, two recent Phase III studies have shown that DOC in combination with CAR or cisplatin is at least as effective as other first-line regimens for stage IIIB and IV NSCLC 40, 41 ; . Phase I and II studies of DOC plus RT in NSCLC have shown good overall response rates, from 35 to 80%, with CR rates ranging from 22 to 34% 42 46 ; . Even higher response rates, from 58 to 100%, have been seen in trials of DOC in combination with CAR or cisplatin and concurrent RT 4750 ; . One such study of weekly DOC plus CAR AUC 2 ; for 6 weeks with concurrent RT to 64 inoperable stage III NSCLC and viracept.

Men should avoid fathering children during and up to 6 months minimum 3 months ; after treatment has stopped. Before you have each treatment with vinorelbine, you will have a blood test. Vinorelbine causes birth defects and should not be used during pregnancy. Women of childbearing potential must use effective contraception during treatment.
